Self-talk is a very important part of the human experience. We all talk to ourselves. We all talk to ourselves, and if you find that you are not talking to yourself, call an ambulance. Self-talk is a window into our beliefs, our limitations, and our possibilities. And so I teach clients how to be aware of their talk to themselves and be aware of how they can change it. People often feel that they can't change their self-talk. They're stuck with it. Well, that's just not true. We know that through research, we know that through experience.
I know it from my own experience. Clients tell me how grateful they are that they've learned to speak more positively to themselves. One of my clients was telling me how his inner voice has held him hostage in certain parts of his life. I suggested journaling because sometimes when you express yourself, talk in writing, externalizing what we're saying to ourselves gives us some separation. We can then judge whether said dialogue is really helpful or could it be altered to give more freedom as a human being. It’s important do be less tied to the past, to have more ability to live in the present. The only moment we have is the present moment. And we have a lot of leverage over what we do with these present moments, moment by moment by moment. Great leaders have learned that they can have an impact on helping people leverage those present moments into a very robust future, collaborating, cooperating, playing together, inventing together, using their prefrontal cortex, being capable of shifting their mindsets. Mindsets, thankfully, are much more in the common vernacular. You hear it all the time. A few years ago, I never heard it except when I said it or fellow colleagues said it. But now, many people understand the difference between a positive and growth mindset and a negative mindset; a reactive mindset versus a proactive mindset. So the popular culture makes my job easier. Because I don't have to “educate people”. I can kind of surf on what they already know and help them leverage that to their own advantage.
